I know this is dumb, but….

A comment from Soompi:

This made me laugh so hard. Yes, François Hollande and Park Geun Hye really need to watch out, because they have such sterling reputations that might be tainted by scandal.

And not just scandals involving silly things like abuse of executive power. We’re talking, K-Pop scandals. And those are the juiciest scandals there are….

I kissed a man on a comedy show!

I have four children out of wedlock!

I can agree with one point–somebody needs to do more research.

  1. I saw that and tried to post something but soompi moderated. Even tho I was polite they didn’t accept the message. I find amusing that post cause the so called controversies are everyday things in sk cause pretty much one picture can cause a ruckus with knets, however they never made anything illegal and have being working for years with many social organizations. I find inetz sometimes a lot more hardcore with the hate than knetz, there are so many that love digging their past mistakes to justify all the bashing they do.

    • Yeah, Soompi probably decided that no conversation initiated by that post would really be worth having. And I can’t say that I disagree–I just found the post funny because it was SO over the top.

I think that a lot of international K-Pop fans like K-Pop because they like certain aspects of the fan culture–they’re socially conservative, or they feel like fans have no control over Western pop culture and they’re looking for a pop culture they can control, or they’re fetishists who really buy into the innocent act (and don’t really realize that that’s the material that’s geared toward kids in Korea, and the material geared toward adults is VERY different). So of course they’re rabid, because the rabidness is the appeal for them. And when you see the serious ignorance like you see here (I have no idea what the reference to a former US president is about–is she thinking of Ted Cruz?), you’re probably talking about someone who is either very young or a troll.

The other thing to keep in mind is that we’re starting to see the veil lifted on some of these hate campaigns in Korea, and they’re being orchestrated by a handful of people. Which I think underscores how badly the media, the labels, etc. are falling down on the job of being the adults, but it also underscores how much of the hate comes from a tiny minority =in Korea=. It’s not “the Korean way” or “Korean culture” or anything like that; it’s just a small number of people who have figured out how to manipulate the system.
